This map was made for C.S Hammond's World Atlas in 1936. Machine coloring, primarily in pastels, along with fine detailing and a simple border are among the features of Hammond's maps. Most maps included in this atlas collection illustrate capitals, boundaries, major cities, towns, and transportation details, such as canals, railroads and steam ship routes. Maps from this pre World War II time period are difficult to find.

Pink, blue, yellow, and green are used as outline colors throughout the body of the map. Adjacent countries, important cities, islands, mountain ranges, and bodies of water are among the identified. 26. Grecia Antica e Asia Minore
Published at the beginning of the 20th century these charming smaller maps by an Italian publisher are a rare and interesting treat. While America began its ascendancy of the map trade, other international publishers continued in producing fine work. These Italian maps are fine evidence of that, as they supply us with much more detail, while yet maintaining simplicity and nice visual composition. They are current to the time, and have a nice muted color. These maps include information for cities, towns, railroad lines, rivers and basic topography. Condition is very good.

45. Turkey in Asia
Art Source International is proud to offer this map from the 1857 edition of Colton's General Atlas. Colton atlases, especially those from the late 1850's, have become increasingly rare. The General Atlas was the first single edition atlas published by the Colton brothers succeeding the expensive two volume Atlas of the World. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the cheap domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. This map of Turkey is very detailed. It shows lakes and rivers, mountains, regions and or provinces, railroads, wagon trails, cities and towns, and many other details. Muted pastel hand coloring in pink, blue, green, and yellow.

50. Turkey in Asia (Asia Minor) and Transcaucasia
This large-scale map produced by Geographer to the Queen of Scotland, Alexander Keith Johnston was published in 1861 in his "Royal Atlas of Modern Geography." Johnston apprenticed to James Kirkwood & Sons, Engravers in 1820. In 1826, he partnered with his brother William in W. & A.K. Johnston. He Died July 9th, 1871 in Yorkshire. Outlines on this map of Asia Minor are hand colored. The incredible level of detail provided is unique to this Scottish mapmaker. This map shows all topography including mountains and physical features, rivers and lakes, cities and towns, provinces and regions, wagon trails, railroads, forts, shipwrecks, and battles. The decorative border shows latitude and longitude to the degree.
