7. America
Published at the beginning of the 20th century these charming smaller maps by an Italian publisher are a rare and interesting treat. While America began its ascendancy of the map trade, other international publishers continued in producing fine work. These Italian maps are fine evidence of that, as they supply us with much more detail, while yet maintaining simplicity and nice visual composition. They are current to the time, and have a nice muted color. These maps include information for cities, towns, railroad lines, rivers and basic topography. Condition is very good.

Date: 1907
Price: $85.00

8. America Septentrionalis... (North America)
This is a striking map of the new world, with bold hand color and some very notable qualities. Showing the colonial possesions of several nations, we see the Spanish developments in the southwest, French territories throughout Canada and the western Mississippi valley, as well as the British colonies. With suprisingly accurate depictions of rivers and coasts, this map provides a reasonably proportionate image of an expansive land. Borders are well distinguished by color, yet there are hints of expansion as the borders of the southern colonies not only extend to the Mississippi, but continue beyond into the French Louisiana territory. The map is well complimented by a large decorative cartouche showing Native American and a European settler. This is a classicly handsome map in very good condition.

We are excited to offer maps from the 1871 edition of Colton's Atlas of America. In our 25 years these are the first Colton maps from 1871 we have been able to acquire. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the inexpensive domestic one.Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. This large scale map came from Rand McNally's Commercial Atlas of America. The Rand McNally Atlas was unusual for its time because it was designed to be used by merchants and shippers. Therefore this map is exceptionally detailed in that it shows every railroad, post office, and small town in existence at that time. It is possible that many towns shown in this map have since ceased to exist, or have been swallowed up by larger towns. This map is therefore the definitive reference for how the area looked at the beginning of the 20th century. This map has beautiful color and is folded at center as issued.

Date: 1911
Price: $75.00

50. Etats-Unis & Mexique
This is a fascinating study of American development and expansion, made by one of the most notable French cartographers. This deftly crafted steel engraving gives us an uncommonly well-defined view of the west and its rapidly developing territories. With a clarity and neatness characteristic of French cartography at the time, this map gives us Indian tribe locations, the latest reconnaissance information from explorations, as well as topography, towns, villages and even a few roads. There are numerous unique features to this image, not the least of which are some rarely seen territories such as the "Huron" territory which encompassed present day Wisconsin and a portion of Minnesota. Condition of this map is very good with the original outline hand color still present. This is a beautiful glimpse of a rapidly developing nation.
