S. Augustus Mitchell Jr. made this hand colored map for "Mitchell's New General Atlas" in 1870. North America is illustrated on this map. Regions are distinguished by bright pastel colors. Deserts, lakes, mountains, rivers, important cities and countries are identified. Recent explorations and discoveries in Antarctica are labled as well.

3. "Revolutionary War Map Showing parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia"
This map, produced in 1832, documents important battles of the Revolutionary War as supplements to the "Atlas to Marshall's Life of Washington". These rare and historically important maps have light pastel hand coloring on well aged paper. Each map has abundant details, including relevant locations and illustrations representing ships and armies distinguished by color. The title of the map includes an explanation of the area shown and the date of the significant event depicted. This map is titled "Map of Part of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina & Georgia which were the scenes of the most important Operations of the Southern Armies". State boundaries have been changed since this map was made. These small maps would look very nice framed, and make great additions to the collection of anyone interested in the revolutionary war or local history.

4. America
Published at the beginning of the 20th century these charming smaller maps by an Italian publisher are a rare and interesting treat. While America began its ascendancy of the map trade, other international publishers continued in producing fine work. These Italian maps are fine evidence of that, as they supply us with much more detail, while yet maintaining simplicity and nice visual composition. They are current to the time, and have a nice muted color. These maps include information for cities, towns, railroad lines, rivers and basic topography. Condition is very good.

5. America Septentrionalis... (North America)
This is a striking map of the new world, with bold hand color and some very notable qualities. Showing the colonial possesions of several nations, we see the Spanish developments in the southwest, French territories throughout Canada and the western Mississippi valley, as well as the British colonies. With suprisingly accurate depictions of rivers and coasts, this map provides a reasonably proportionate image of an expansive land. Borders are well distinguished by color, yet there are hints of expansion as the borders of the southern colonies not only extend to the Mississippi, but continue beyond into the French Louisiana territory. The map is well complimented by a large decorative cartouche showing Native American and a European settler. This is a classicly handsome map in very good condition.

This map is from a rare and incredibly thorough publication by the French publisher Bouillet. Full of the French sensibility of the time, this map combines fine craftsmanship with the latest information available. The end result is a map that is visually interesting and historically useful. The detail is quite good, while not being so dense as to obscure its legibility. Complimented by full hand color this small map is an interesting historical reference with a good deal potential for framing.

Thomas G. Bradford (1802-87) of Boston Massachusetts included this map in his first atlas, titled "A Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical and Commercial," published in 1835. These skillfully created maps were hand colored, which adds to their classic, decorative appeal. A sage border surrounds this map of the Pacific Ocean and its surroundings. Pink, yellow, and green are used as outline colors throughout the body of the map. Counties, important cities, rivers, and bodies of water are identified.

This beautiful map of Atlantic Ocean was printed in Edinburgh by Adam and Charles Black for "Black's General Atlas of the World," published in 1885. This map is in excellent condition with bright, crisp color, and is printed on heavier paper stock then is customary on maps from this period.

This detailed map was originally published in Rand, McNally & Co.'s Universal Atlas of The World. From its beginnings as a small Chicago printing shop in 1856, Rand McNally & Company launched a 146-year continuing journey that has led the company to its place as the world's premier provider of geographic and travel information. This colorful map was published at the turn of the century in 1902. This map shows cities and towns, lakes and rivers, and the existing railroad network. Also note the information in the margin of the state maps which details land and water area, population broken down by gender and ethnic group, and the population of major towns and counties. City maps show the location of major streets and roads, as well as points of interest.

These maps are some of the most colorful and accurate maps produced in the 1860's. Johnson maps are characterized by hand coloring in red and green and distinctive borders, including iron scrollwork and a Celtic design. This is a very beautiful map of North America,in great condition. Alaska is a Russian territory, Montana doesn"t exist and Dakota has not been divided into north and south. Nebraska has no northern border and Nevada is missing its southern tip.

This has to be one of our most stunning maps of the Americas. Nicholas de Fer published this map in 1717(dated on map). His depiction of California as an island followed common thought on this subject. In fact, it wasn't until 1746 that Father Consag sailed completely around the Gulf of California and settled the question. Ferdinand VII in 1747 in a royal decree, stated: "California is not an Island".

46. Map of North America
One of the dominant firms in 19th century cartography was unquestionably the Mitchell publishing company. While they had been producing fine quality maps and atlases since the 1830's, they also made instructional material that was up to date and accurate. This map comes from one of the early school atlases published by Mitchell, and contains a wealth of information, and attractive hand color. The condition is very good, with some mild staining, but mostly outside the image.

He sold his business to the Milton Bradley Company in the 1880's. His maps from the 1850's have become extremely difficult to obtain, especially in this fine condition.
