1. "Map of Oceanica Exhibiting its various Divisions, Island Groups, & c."
This exceptional map is from the first edition of "Mitchell's New General Atlas" published by S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr in 1860. The steel plate engraved map has original hand coloring and has been very well maintained with bright color and crisp lines. Surrounding this map of Georgia nad Alabama is a decorative floral border. Also show are railroads, rivers and lakes, cities and towns, and counties.

2. "Map of Oceanica, Exhibiting its Various Divisions, Island Groups & c."
This map was made by S. Augustus Mitchell for "Mitchell's New General Atlas" published in 1887. The well maintained maps in this atlas feature Mitchell's characteristic pastel coloring and abundant details of geographical features. Oceania is illustrated on this map with an inset showing the Sandwich Islands. Details include the names of regions, important towns, rivers, lakes, and mountain ranges. Regions are distinguished by color. These 1887 maps offer a fascinating perspective of areas that have since undergone significant growth and change, in addition to their value as great examples of Mitchell's work.

3. Carte de L'Oceanie (Chart of the Ocean)
This beautifully engraved map by Victor Malte-Brun was published ca. 1848 in his Atlas de Geographie Universelle. The Soft Pastel Colors and toned paper are perfect for framing. This map would make a wonderful gift or addition to a collection.

4. Carte Generale de L'Oceanie (General Map of Oceania)
This map is from the "Atlas General," published by Louis Etienne Dussieux in 1848. Details include names of lakes and rivers, cities and towns, regions, and topography. Accentuated with hand outline color these steel engraved maps show fine detail and would make an excellent addition to any collection. Also included is an inset map of Colonie de la Nouvelle Galles (Colony of New France).

5. Farther India or China India and N.W. Oceanica or Malaysia
Thomas G. Bradford (1802-87) of Boston Massachusetts included this map in his first atlas, titled "A Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical and Commercial," published in 1835. These skillfully created maps were hand colored, which adds to their classic, decorative appeal. A sage border surrounds this map of farther India, Indochina, northwest Oceania or Malaysia. Pink, yellow, and green are used as outline colors throughout the body of the map. Counties, important cities, rivers, and bodies of water are identified.

7. L'Oceanie (OCEANICA)
This hand colored map is from the "Atlas de Geographie", made by Felix Delamarche in Paris, 1856. Oceania is illustrated on this well maintained French map. Insets show Tahiti and the Marquises Islands. Pastel colors were used distinguish regions. Other details include identification (in French) of regions, important cities, rivers, lakes, and deserts.

8. Map of Oceania
One of the dominant firms in 19th century cartography was unquestionably the Mitchell publishing company. While they had been producing fine quality maps and atlases since the 1830's, they also made instructional material that was up to date and accurate. This map comes from one of the early school atlases published by Mitchell, and contains a wealth of information, and attractive hand color. The condition is very good, with some mild staining, but mostly outside the image.

9. Map of Oceania
With the 19th century innovations of publishing and technology, the world became a smaller place and one which anyone could become acquainted with. As these changes blossomed, the fledgling company of Rand McNally realized the interest in small accessible material, and produced a pocket atlas. These maps carry handy reference information, and were up to date for the period. They include cities, some towns as well as some roads. They have their own charm and would be great for framing, and decorative use.

This map is from the 1895 "Rand McNally & Co.'s Enlarged Business Atlas and Shipper's Guide, containing large scale maps of all states and territories in the United States, the Dominion of Canada, the Republic of Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and Cuba, showing in detail the entire railroad system, the different railroads being distinguished by different figures, accompanied by a new and original compilation and ready reference index, giving the express company doing business over each road, and accurately locating all islands, lakes, rivers, mountains, counties, parishes, cities, towns, post offices, railroad stations, villages, etc, together with complete reference maps of all countries, printed from type-lettered plates, producing the clearest typographical effect of any known engraved plates, also guide maps showing the streets, transportation lines, and public buildings of the large cities in the United States".

13. Oceania
This large scale map came from Rand McNally's Commercial Atlas of America. The Rand McNally Atlas was unusual for its time because it was designed to be used by merchants and shippers. Therefore this map is exceptionally detailed in that it shows every railroad, post office, and small town in existence at that time. Many towns shown in this map have since ceased to exist, or have been swallowed up by larger towns. This map is therefore the definitive reference for how North America looked at the turn of the century. Every railroad is featured in a table in margin of map.

19. Oceanie
E. V. Monin made this 1822 edition of the"Atlas Universel de Geographie Ancienne & Moderne en 42 Cartes" in Paris. Bright colors highlight regions on these small, but detailed maps. This hand colored, French map illustrates Oceania. The names of regions, important cities, mountain ranges, lakes and rivers are identified. These old maps are in very good condition with unique outline coloring.

20. Rand McNally Popular Map of Oceania
Rand McNally & Company, still a major name in map publishing to this day, began as a small print shop opened in Chicago in 1856 by William H. Rand. The shop originally printed guidebooks and directories. In 1858, Rand hired Andrew McNally who was later to become a partner. Within the next few years, the shop got into the railroad business by starting to print railway tickets and schedules, a key step in the development of the company. The ticket printing led to the publishing of railway guides, and by 1872 Rand McNally and Company had the capacity to publish maps. This map of Oceania came from Rand McNally's Commercial Atlas, sixty-first Edition dated 1930. A highly successful run of atlases that lasted over a decade. These maps were primarily used by business, because of their accurate listing of railroads in operation as well as tables of statistical information. This map includes all cities and towns, lakes, rivers, and bodies of water. All topographical features are also included as well as political features such as regions and provinces.
