This antique map came from Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas, published in 1863, by Johnson and Ward. These maps are some of the most colorful and accurate maps produced in the 1860's. Johnson maps are characterized by hand coloring in red and green and distinctive borders, including iron scrollwork and a Celtic design. This beautiful map of South America includes insets of Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco, with a depiction of the Harbor of Rio de Janeiro.

Published at the beginning of the 20th century these charming smaller maps by an Italian publisher are a rare and interesting treat. While America began its ascendancy of the map trade, other international publishers continued in producing fine work. These Italian maps are fine evidence of that, as they supply us with much more detail, while yet maintaining simplicity and nice visual composition. They are current to the time, and have a nice muted color. These maps include information for cities, towns, railroad lines, rivers and basic topography. Condition is very good.

These are simply beautiful and almost elegant French made maps. Combining the latest in cartographic information with a refined sense of aesthetics, Tardieu produced outstanding steel engraved maps rivaled by few. Containing detail for topography, hydrography, as well as local development, these maps are an attractive historical reference as well as a fine decorative piece. Published by a notable 19th century French publisher, this map is full of the style, accuracy and innovation that brought the French to prominence. This attractive steel engraved map is full of the detail and textured work that made 19th century French cartography the best. Interestingly while this map is hand colored, there is a printed color layer that features all the roads and major cities in a strong red. This was an innovation that wouldn"t catch on until 40 years later. Condition is good.

This atlas was apparently produced only in 1864, 1865, and 1866. In our research we saw no record of the 1866 being sold in the last 24 years. This map of Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay is beautifully hand-colored, showing nations, mountains, rivers, and major cities. A wonderful addition to any collection.

Condition is good some for some water staining throughout the images. While the staining is present it doesn"t obscure the image's readability.
